Muay Thai is the other half of what a child learns here, and it is the one they usually enjoy first. It is striking — hands, feet, knees and elbows — taught as footwork, balance and combinations on the pads rather than as a fight. A one-hour class on a Friday at 5:00 PM.

It suits a different child, and often the same child on a different day. Where Jiu-Jitsu is patient and close, Muay Thai is loud and moving, and a week that has both in it keeps a short attention span engaged far better than three sessions of the same thing. Children are grouped by age and size and supervised throughout.

The standard of behaviour is the same one the Jiu-Jitsu mat runs on: listening the first time, lining up, and trying the hard thing again after it did not work. The coordination is the part parents notice — a child who could not reliably hit a pad in week one is hitting combinations by the end of the month.

What makes this class different

Friday at 5:00 PM

One hour a week, at the end of the school week, on a mat where making noise is part of the class. There is no fixed intake, so any Friday is a reasonable place to begin.

Coordination before power

Stance, footwork, guard and timing come first, drilled on pads and shields. A child who can move well hits well later; it does not work in the other order.

Both disciplines, one membership

Kids Muay Thai on Friday and Kids Jiu-Jitsu on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, all covered by the same membership. Most children end up doing both.

Questions parents and beginners ask

What age can my child start?

The kids classes run from age 4 to 12. From 13, teenagers move into the teens class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, which is pitched for their age rather than for small children.

Does my child need gloves to start?

Not for a first class — comfortable clothes they can move in and a water bottle are enough. Gloves are worth having once they are coming regularly, and the shop stocks a kids pair.

My child is shy. Will they cope?

Shy children are the ones this tends to help most, and the coaches are used to it. Nobody is forced to perform in front of the class, and a nervous first session is normal rather than a problem.

Can my child do Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu?

Yes, and most do. The two run on different days and are covered by the same membership, so a child can train up to four times a week without anything extra to pay.
